My artistic process is an exploration of materiality. A tactile experience created using a range of mediums including oil paint, watercolour, textiles and fabrics. Experimenting with hand and machine embroidery I weave together ideas of our bodies and the relationship with the material. I feel inspired by the body’s unusual textures, forms, and movements. Its innards and outers provide an alternative language of anatomy which I use in my work.

 

My work investigates the resilience of flesh and the intricacies of human and non-human forms through the construction of abstract sculptures and paintings. This might be inspired by real human veins, or the stringy internals of a pumpkin, both providing a visceral starting point. 

 

As if you were zooming in through a microscope; I make work where the initially familiar subject, becomes unfamiliar. Reimagining what is represented.

My ideas are an ongoing conversation and representation of the impermanence of both the material and of life. Whilst stuffing, sewing and staining fleshy coloured nylons, the process feels surgical. The wrapping and threading of wires and wool is a precise yet expressive procedure. Influenced by our bodies, I want the viewer to feel connected to the work and disturbed by the forms.
